Our Story
Born from Ice
Ten thousand years ago, the last ice age carved a deep kettle into the ancient Finnish bedrock. As the massive glacier retreated northward, it left behind a landscape sculpted by unimaginable force — ridges, hollows, and a basin that would become something extraordinary.
Underground springs, filtered through layers of glacial sand and gravel, began to fill the hollow with crystal-clear water. Over millennia, this became Sääksjärvi — Finland’s largest spring lake, a body of water so pure that visibility reaches the very bottom.
Long before the resort, the waters were believed to have healing powers. Sanatoriums for pulmonary disease patients rose along these shores, and in 1941, the Union of Tuberculosis Patients was founded right here at Kiljavannummi — a testament to the restorative spirit of this place.
In 1950, the Central Organisation of Finnish Trade Unions (SAK) built a retreat center on the shore — a four-story main building and lakeside sauna that would host President Urho Kekkonen and generations of Finnish leaders, thinkers, and makers. Finland’s national writer Aleksis Kivi is said to have modeled Ilvesjärvi in his masterwork Seven Brothers after this very lake.
Today, Kiljava Resort carries that legacy forward. The springs still flow, the forests still stand, and the tradition of genuine Finnish hospitality endures. The soul of this place remains unchanged — a sanctuary born from ice, shaped by time, and made for you.
